Laser Skin Treatments

Brighten, restore and improve skin with laser skin treatments

Laser skin treatments are designed to help you address issues such as uneven skin tone, sun or age spots, and clear skin. They can also improve the texture of the skin.

At Vitality Medi Spa in Halifax, we use a range of lasers including Nd:YAG, intense pulsed light (IPL), BBL, Q-switched and KTP to help our patients achieve their desired results.

Our customized treatment plans are designed by Dr. van Aardt, our in-house physician and former President of the Canadian Association of Aesthetic Medicine, who is also able to prescribe topical treatments for specific conditions—something you can only get in a medical facility such as ours.

What is photorejuvenation?

Photorejuvenation is growing increasingly popular as a way to effectively and safely revive the skin to improve texture and complexion, and produce a smoother and younger-looking appearance. By selectively targeting the areas that have changed with age or due to skin conditions, photorejuvenation treats fine lines, sun damage or age spots, enlarged pores, redness and flushing.

This treatment provides effective relief from rosacea, broken capillaries, and spider veins (telangiectasias) on the face. It can also diminish birthmarks and port wine stains. This treatment typically uses IPL and combination of lasers including Pixel, Q-switched, KTP, BBL, and ND-Yag to improve skin appearance. A secondary benefit of these treatments is that they stimulate the production of collagen in the skin. Collagen helps the skin stay firm and typically diminishes as we age, causing the skin to droop. As more collagen is produced, the skin appears firmer. To maintain the results, follow-up treatments are typically scheduled every three months.

How can photodynamic therapy combat concerns in my skin?

Photodynamic therapy is an innovative treatment that rejuvenates skin by targeting uneven complexion, acne, inflammation, texture and skin tone, mottled pigmentation and can help minimize large pores. Photodynamic therapy is shown to effectively treat acne, with outcomes similar to those of Accutane without the side effects of the drug. Photodynamic therapy often happens in conjunction with microdermabrasion.

During the procedure, a light pass with our microneedling device will be performed on the treatment area  to prepare the skin, allowing the skin to better accept and incubate the topical solution used for PDT. Next, Levulan (aminolevulinic acid) is applied to the treatment area and activated by the laser. When activated, Levulan reduces acne, cystic acne and rosacea. It has even been shown to destroy precancerous lesions (actinic keratoses) and certain pre-cancerous cells in the skin.

The skin will appear to be red, resembling a sunburn from 2 to 10 days. For patients treating acne, several rounds are typically required. Combined with in-home treatments, it is possible sustain the results for extended periods.
